Ambrose Alii University, Ekpoma is both a teaching and examining body charged with the responsibilities of providing high education and advancing knowledge through teaching, learning and research. Ambrose Alli University is also to provide course of instructions in various branches of learning, make provision for research and for the preservation, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in such manner as the University may determine. Ambrose Alli University is also to grant degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions and honours to deserving persons.

The origin of older universities in the developed world can be traced in Europe to as far back as twelfth century. Most of them developed from cathedral and monastery schools and other centres of learning under the guidance of academic leaders whose fame spread far beyond their immediate environment, enabling them to attract scholars and students from far and near.
