Benue State University

Benue State University was established in 1992 as a response to a genuine need by the State Government to provide the essential impetus to economic, cultural, social and vocational development. Although there is a Federal University of Agriculture in Makurdi, the Benue State Government decided in favor of a conventional University partly for the reason that the Federal University of Agriculture is so specialized that courses offered are available only to a limited number of Benue indigence.

Benue State University is against this background that a 13- member steering committee for the proposed University was inaugurated by the Government of Benue State under the Executive leadership of His Excellency, Lt. Col. Fidelis Attahiru Makka on Thursday, 18th August 1991.

The mission of the University was clearly defined in the stated objectives as contained in the Edict establishing the University thus: * To encourage and promote advancement of knowledge and to hold out to all persons without discrimination of race, creed or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring University education;
