Beauty care covers the overall condition of looking good. But now the demand is gradually shifting from basic lipstick and nail polish, to skin care, hair care and anti-ageing products. No longer it is a ladies field, advising on grooming, hair styling to other men.

The Work of Beautician

Beauticians perform personal grooming services, for example facials, massages, manicures, pedicures and scalp treatments depending upon the personal features of the customer, to make their customers look healthy and attractive. They may also advise clients on grooming on the right choice of hair-style, care and maintenance of their hair and on overall make-up.
Work in the field of beauty and hair care encompasses several areas. Beauty therapists cover treatments for face, skin, nails and body, and extend make-up, facials to massage and diet. Cosmetologist covers the overall condition of looking good. Hair dressing is another specialisation, which not only involves styling and cutting of hair but also provide treatment for the hair and scalp. Further specialisation in this area involves catering to one particular type of need, for example bridal make up.

Education and Skills for becoming beautician:

There is no specific entry qualification to enter this field, except for an interest, inclination and the desire to keep learning in the field. One can learn the basics by doing a Diploma in Beauty/ Hair Care. The duration of the courses vary from institution to institution, and also depends on the specialisation. But later on, it is the experience and hands on practice that counts.

Remuneration

Earning in this field vary widely depending upon a number of factors like the size and location of the beauty parlour, the number of hours worked and customer’s tipping habits. In the beginning, beauticians work with senior beauticians to gain some experience and get some fixed amount as salary. This could vary from Rs. 5,000 to 15,000 per month. Professionals with three to five years of experience can even make Rs. 50,000-plus.

Job prospects of Beautician:
They are usually employed by established salons. Most big hotels, health clubs, schools for Grooming and Modelling employ beauticians for their clients’ hair styling and overall beauty care. After some years of experience many beauticians go on their own.

It is a growing profession. Today a lot many people. From teenagers (of both sexes) to older men and women, use various beauty products and therapies. The boost in the beauty products industry also has placed beauty and cosmetology among the most lucrative career options today.
