Scientists from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in collaboration with researchers at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT studied genetic relationships between all Indians. The study broke the hitherto held and believed fact that Aryans and Dravidians signified the ancestry of North and South Indians into a myth. Their study revealed astounding facts that the present-day Indian population was a result of a mix of ancient of ancient north and south. We bear the genomic contributions from two distinct Ancestral North Indian (ANI) and the Ancestral South Indian(ASI). According to the study report, the initial settlement took place 65,000 years ago in the Andamand and in ancient South India at around the same time. At a later stage, around 40,000 years ago, the ancient 40,000 years ago, the ancient north Indians emerged. At some point of time, the ancient north and the south mixed, giving birth to a different set of population which exists now. So there is a genetic relationship between the population within India.

This also helps understand why 70 % of Indians are burdened with genetic diseases which sets us apart from the rest of the world. The study may also help to study why certain conditions had restricted themselves to one population. For example, breast cancer among Parsi Women, motor neuron diseases among the residents of Tirupati and Chittoor or sickle cell anaemia among certain tribes in the Northeast can be understood better now.
