The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (known more commonly as the CUNY Graduate Center or the GC) is the main doctorate-granting institution of the City University of New York (while other CUNY schools may house doctoral degree programs, the degrees are granted through the GC). It is housed in the former B. Altman and Company department store on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, which it shares with the Science, Industry and Business (SIBL) branch of the New York Public Library and Oxford University Press. The 4,000 students at the GC are mostly doctoral students in one of over 30 programs with the exception of those pursuing degrees in six master’s programs and the CUNY Baccalaureate Program.
The Graduate Center’s Web Site is a comprehensive compilation of materials from its current official print publications, complemented by other materials prepared expressly for the web site. The principal documents include the Bulletin of The Graduate Center, the Student Handbook, and the admissions prospectus, Doctoral Study. Among other print sources are 365 Fifth (its newsletter) and press releases.
In building this site, the primary goal has been to provide easy access to information about all aspects of The Graduate Center—not only to display its many facets to newcomers but also to provide an online “user’s manual” and serve as a communal hub. The site has been planned so that it can evolve and be enhanced with features that will promote its utility. Your suggestions will assist us in maintaining and developing it most effectively.
The City University of New York reserves the right, because of changing conditions, to make modifications of any nature in the academic programs and requirements of the University and its constituent colleges without advance notice. Tuition and fees set forth in this publication are similarly subject to change by the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York. The University regrets any inconvenience this may cause.
The Graduate Center is committed to following the letter and spirit of laws pertaining to affirmative action and of CUNY policies pertaining to the promotion of pluralism and diversity and to combating racism and bigotry. Concerns, questions, and complaints about equal employment and affirmative action may be addressed to any member of The Graduate Center’s Affirmative Action Committee or to the Affirmative Action Officer, 1-212-817-7200.
Mission
The Graduate School and University Center is located in the heart of Manhattan and set within the large and multi-campus City University of New York. It fosters advanced graduate education, original research and scholarship, innovative university-wide programs, and vibrant public events that draw upon and contribute to the complex communities of New York City and beyond.
Library
The CUNY Graduate Center is served by the Mina Rees Library, named after former president Mina S. Rees. Situated on three floors of the Graduate Center’s midtown Manhattan facility, the library houses a print collection of approximately 275,000 volumes, and subscriptions to over 1,500 print serials. The Library is also connected to the CUNY+ catalog system which allows borrowers to request items from other CUNY libraries, providing access to over 7.5 million volumes. Physical proximity to the NYPL Humanities and Social Sciences Library and the NYPL Science, Technology and Business library relieves the GC from needing as extensive a collection as other prestigious institutions: both are within a five minute walk of the Graduate Center.
