Gujarat Ayurved University

Gujarat Ayurved University was established in 1967 by an act passed by Gujarat State legislative Assembly in 1965. It is the first statutory University of its Kind both at national and international level – exclusively devoted to Ayurvedic studies and Research. This University is administratively linked to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare both at State and Centre-indicating its special status.

The offered courses cover different aspects of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants and allied traditional systems of medicine. Introduction of these multidisciplinary courses in the present times is considered most opportune, since the global demand for herbal preparations is growing in an exponential manner. India has a rich treasure of Medicinal Plants and can become the main source for supply of herbal drugs to the whole world but lack of or inadequate quality standards of raw material has been one of the major impediments in wider acceptance of Indian herbal drugs. Various international agencies like World Health Organization have been emphasizing the importance and need of standardization of herbal raw materials. Skilled technical manpower possessing the knowledge on all aspects of Medicinal Plants is needed for this. Sensing its urgency, an effort was made to fulfill this requirement by establishing two institutes- namely Institute for Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences (IAPS) and Institute of Medicinal Plant Sciences (IMPS) in the year 1999-2000. The former offers D.Pharm (Ayu), B.Pharm (Ayu) and M.Pharm (Ayu) while, M.Sc. (Medicinal Plants) degree is offered by IMPS. IMPS adopts multidisciplinary approach for comprehensive teaching of all aspects related to Medicinal Plants. M.Sc.(Medicinal Plants) is a highly specialized course with emphasis on 3 major aspects namely, Medico-Botanical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, including Material, Personnel and Natural Resources Management. Some of the alumni have joined research institutes as research Associates, while many others have joined reputed Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Industries in India. It is gratifying to note that the courses have been recognized by various, well-known government organizations like ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) CCRAS (Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha) etc. for their fellowship award and staff recruitment. The University has a vast library having rare publications and manuscripts. It can boast of possessing a good number of them on palm leaves and Bhojpatras .The Ayurved pharmacy is engaged in production of various Ayurvedic medicines as required by the hospitals and Research activities of the University. Realizing the importance of Ayurved University has broad based its training programmes. Beside the usual graduate and post graduate courses provided by this University, the faculty for special Diploma and Certificate courses in Ayurveda for Foreign professionals is also available. For effective management of these courses, an International centre for Ayurvedic studies has been established. Students from different countries like Japan, Sri Lanka, France, Russia, Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Nigeria and Poland have joined the various courses.
