The Helmut-Schmidt-Universität of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg (HSU / UniBw H) has been on efforts of the then Federal Minister of Defence , Helmut Schmidt , founded in 1972 under the name “College of the Armed Forces in Hamburg.” The inclusion of academic teaching activities took place in autumn 1973. She is one of two universities , the army has set up to train their young officer.

Helmut-Schmidt-Universität is generally only officers and cadets of the Bundeswehr are available. However, since there is absorption of lecture cooperation agreements with friendly countries to study the basis of which a few selected officers from these states at HSU.

At Helmut-Schmidt-Universität acquired academic degrees and titles correspond to those of state universities and are recognized as such, because the study takes place according to the specifications of the Hamburg Higher Education Law. The university has the habilitation – and doctorates .
