The College of Hochschule für Jüdische Studien (HfJS) exists since 1979. Hochschule für Jüdische Studien is sponsored by the Central Council of Jews in Germany and funded by federal and state governments. The HfJS is a nationally recognized university. Nowhere else in Europe can Jewish studies in a comparable width are studied. This allows the HfJS their Jewish and non-Jewish students to convey the complexity and fascination of Judaism and to set academic trends.

With eight chairs and as many assistant places the College of Jewish Studies in Heidelberg, now the European center of excellence in their field. As a state-recognized university it is the contact person for politics, media, churches and schools since 2007 and member of the Rectors’ Conference.

As part of a dynamic community and as a catalyst for understanding the HfJS sees its role not only in academic research and knowledge transfer. Your goal is to make the German Jewish community, the third largest in Europe and the wider society to shape. With its award-winning Youth Dialogue Project Likrat (Hebrew for “in meeting”), it contributes to mutual understanding between the religions and counteracts anti-Semitic resentments.

Library
The library includes one of the largest collections of Judaica in Germany and includes works from all disciplines of Jewish studies, 16 to 21 Century. Hochschule für Jüdische Studien serves not only to teachers and students of the University of Heidelberg and HfJS for research, teaching and study, it is also the interested public as a reference library. The library extends on the main floor of the 2009 newly opened university over the surface of the old building and the northern wing of the new building. It thus forms a bridge between the buildings. Along with the reading loft and the basement, the library includes approximately 540 square meters and has 2,000 meters of shelf space in the open access area, as well as 400 meters in the magazine Real area, partly in a modern
