Since its founding in 1872 by Dr. Henry Olin, ICO has remained at the forefront of optometry through the dedicated efforts of faculty, students and alumni.

The Illinois College of Optometry awards the degree of Doctor of Optometry (O. D.) and Bachelor of Science in Visual Science (BSVS).  After earning the Doctor of Optometry degree, graduates can advance their clinical training through a variety of residency programs, all of which are one year in length. The College also offers a joint program with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Chicago (U of C) to obtain an O. D. degree and a Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

ICO’s distinguished faculty brings the intensive curriculum to life. In an academic environment that is challenging, the expertise and support of ICO’s faculty is valued by students. At ICO, all faculty have regularly scheduled office hours and students have direct access and opportunity to consult them for instructions, clarification, and guidance. The faculty takes pride in the quantity and quality of their interactions with students. To this end, the faculty plays significant roles in everything from the admissions interview to student organizations and community service projects to graduation. The faculty also participates in research and scholarly work – often involving students – as well as professional organizations to further enhance their own teaching as well as the student experience.
