As a highly selective, nationally renowned, and internationally oriented four-year college of arts and sciences, Kalamazoo College has developed a tradition of excellence in the fulfillment of this mission. It is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and enrolls 1,348 students from 40 states and 25 countries. Founded in 1833, “K” College is among the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the nation.
Kalamazoo College has 103 full-time faculty members, 86 percent of whom hold a PhD or the highest degree in their field. The student-faculty ratio is 13-to-1. Teaching is the most important responsibility of the faculty.

It all started when a young minister named Thomas Merrill arrived in Michigan with $7.00 and a plan to establish a Baptist college on the frontier. In 1833, with the ambitious assistance of Judge Caleb Eldred, Merrill’s dream became real, and the history of Kalamazoo College formally began.
Kalamazoo College offers twenty-seven majors through which students explore and develop expertise in an academic discipline. Majors programs are designed to move from the broad to the specific through a sequence of core and elective courses. Upper-level majors courses usually delve deeply into a specific topic, and students can shape a particular emphasis within a major through their choice of upper-level courses. No matter what the discipline, all majors programs build skills in written and oral expression, information literacy, critical thinking and analysis, creative problem-solving, and independent scholarship.
