Lapin yliopisto by the year 1991 until the University of Lapland, the Finnish university, which was founded in Rovaniemi 1 March 1979 .
Lapin yliopisto is Finland’s only university, which in the name of the province ‘s name. Despite this, the University of Lapland is the last few years, wanted to profile itself as represented in the fields in the upper level of education nationally representative university. A large part of the University of Lapland, the students should be from elsewhere in Finland or abroad. After graduating only a small fraction of them will work in northern Finland.
Lapin yliopisto
The university was founded in 1979 as the Lapin yliopisto. Belonged to the original University of Faculty of Education, law school faculty and the library. University was founded later in the Faculty of Social Sciences ( 1982 ) and the Faculty of Arts ( 1990 ). Independent institutes established in the Continuing Education Centre ( 1983 ), Language Centre (1983), Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM, 1985 ) and the Arctic Centre ( 1989 ). Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law, Arctic Centre in the Institute merged in 1997 .
Lapin yliopisto celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004. Anniversary year, the University organized the third Doctor and Master of promotion, which was inaugurated 14 honorary doctorates, among them, among other things , Antti Eskola, and Peter McLaren (see the University of Lapland, Promotion 2004 ). University’s first promotion was held in 1992 , which was inaugurated nine honorary doctorates. The second ceremony in 1999 was ordained 15 honorary doctorates.
