Long Island University was chartered by the New York State Education Department in 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y., as a nonsectarian, coeducational, privately supported university established to provide “effective and moderately priced education” to people from “all walks of life.” From its beginning, admission to the University has been based solely on merit and promise. Large numbers of immigrants and children of immigrants have enrolled at Long Island University in their quest to achieve the American dream. Today, more than 11,200 students* study, learn and grow at the original campus, located in the heart of thriving downtown Brooklyn.
The College of Pharmacy, the oldest unit of Long Island University, now named the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was established as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1886. It became affiliated with the University in 1929 and merged with the Brooklyn Campus in 1976. One of the largest private colleges of pharmacy in the country, it is a doctoral degree-granting unit with a strong emphasis on training hospital and community pharmacists.
