For over 100 years, Massachusetts Maritime Academy has been preparing women and men for exciting and rewarding careers on land and sea. As the nation’s finest co-ed maritime college, MMA challenges students to succeed by balancing a unique regimented lifestyle with a typical four-year college environment. As a member of the cadet corps you will live, study, sail, work and play in an atmosphere that encourages you to be your best.
Located on Cape Cod, at the mouth of the scenic Cape Cod Canal, Massachusetts Maritime Academy is the ideal college to pursue your love for the ocean, your concern for the environment, your interest in Math and Sciences, and your thirst for adventure. As part of your training you will travel to exotic foreign ports aboard our new training ship Kennedy — a 15,500 horsepower, 540 foot steamship — which you and your fellow cadets will actually control under the close supervision of seasoned professionals.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy was founded by an act of the state legislature on June 11, 1891 as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School, the name was changed in 1913 to the Massachusetts Nautical School and took its present name in 1942. The school’s first training ship was the USS Enterprise on loan from the Navy.
The Academy will challenge you. While more is expected of you in your academics, physical condition and personal behavior, the benefits are great. You graduate with more opportunities than at an ordinary college because of the structure, leadership training and discipline at the Academy. You will earn a Bachelor of Science degree, and can earn a Merchant Marine Officer’s License, and a Naval Officer’s Commission (optional). Regardless of which direction you choose, you will graduate a changed person. You will become more knowledgeable, more experienced and more confident in yourself and your future. Our excellent job placement rate proves that Massachusetts Maritime Academy students have learned the most important lesson any college can teach — how to succeed.
