Maulana Azad National Urdu University
Introduction
The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) was established in 1998 by an Act of the Parliament as a Central University with an All India jurisdiction. The Mandate and Objective of the University, as per the Act, is to promote and develop the Urdu language, provide higher, technical and vocational education in the Urdu medium and to provide focus on women’s education. The University has started functioning from 9th January 1998 with headquarters at Hyderabad . The campus is located in 200 acres of land at Gachibowli, Hyderabad .
The University is fully funded by the University Grants Commission and functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The President of India is the Visitor to the University. Shri I K Gujaral, former Prime Minister of India, was the first Chancellor of the University and Prof. M.S. Jairajpuri was the first Vice-Chancellor. Padma Vibhushan Prof. Obaid Siddiqui, FRS and Prof. A.M. Pathan are the present Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor respectively.
The Act empowers the University to provide education through both the distance and campus modes of education.
MANUU offers postgraduate, graduate, diploma and certificate courses through distance education. It has uniquely partnered with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi , by entering into a Memorandum of Collaboration which empowers this University to adopt, translate and offer any course of IGNOU into Urdu. The University has adopted the Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed.) course and offered the same through distance mode for in-service teachers of Urdu and those serving in Urdu medium schools. Over 56,000 students are on rolls in 108 study centers. One Examination Center is established at Jeddah for NRI students at Saudi Arabia .
It has established Eight Regional Centres (one each at Delhi , Patna , Bangalore, Bhopal , Darbhanga, Kolkatta, Srinaga.
