The Ancient Romans gave the name of a GOD of war to March as it is generally characterized by wild winds. Mars was the name of Roman GOD of War. He was always shown as a fierce, beared figure in armour and helmet carrying a spear and a shield.
He was more than a war God: he was also the GOD of farming and prayers were said to him when fields were made ready for sowing. March is the month of mars because it marks the beginning of the season when war and farming, two important activities in a Roman’s life, could start again.
