Medizinische Universität Innsbruck was the first January 2004 founded. Until then, she was a faculty of the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (founded 1669). Together with the Medizinische Universität Innsbruck has some 1,700 employees and 3,800 students is the largest educational and research institution in western Austria. It is the State University of Tyrol , Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Liechtenstein .

The medicine in Innsbruck has a long tradition. Already in 1307 was in Schwaz near Innsbruck offers a first city hospital. Due to the rapid population growth caused by the booming silver mining, it was necessary to develop their own training structures. Thus in 1669 by Emperor Leopold I, the University of Innsbruck and thereby founded a medical school, the first in the Alps, built. A high point in the checkered history was the creation of Austria’s first chair of surgery in 1733. Later, the University of Innsbruck was twice dissolved and re-opened. 1869 saw the final re-establishment by Leopold Hasner of Artha .
