Missouri State University (MSU or Mo State formerly Southwest Missouri State University) is a public university  located in Springfield, Missouri and founded in 1905. It is the state’s second largest university, with an official enrollment of 20,949 for the Fall 2010 semester. In 2010 students represented 46 states and the Virgin Islands, and 84 countries.

Missouri State University was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. During its early years, the institution’s primary purpose was preparing teachers for the public school systems in the southwest region of Missouri. Here are some important dates in the history of the University: 1899 The State Fruit Experiment Station, located in Mountain Grove, Mo., is established by Missouri Legislature. It remained a state agency until 1974, when it became part of what is now Missouri State University. Therefore, it is the oldest segment of the University. The Mountain Grove campus is now part of the University System. 1905 The main campus is founded in Springfield, Mo. June 11, 1906 The first class of 543 students starts classes in off-campus facilities.

Mission
Missouri State University is a public, comprehensive university system with a mission in public affairs, whose purpose is to develop educated persons.

The University’s statewide mission in public affairs, requiring a campus-wide commitment to foster competence and responsibility in the common vocation of citizenship, distinguishes its identity. The academic experience is grounded in a general education curriculum that draws heavily from the liberal arts and sciences. This foundation provides the basis for mastery of focused disciplinary and professional studies, as well as enables critical, independent and intellectual judgment about the culture, values, and institutions of the larger society.
