Welcome to NLU, a university with a tradition of access, a proud history and a strong commitment to diversity, excellence and innovation.
If you are starting your college career, I want you to know there has never been a better time to get an undergraduate degree. These are challenging economic times—and our accelerated bachelor’s degree programs are designed to give you the skills you need to move ahead in your career. Lifelong learning is one of the best ways to ensure that you stay competitive in today’s marketplace, and NLU offers courses and degree programs in education, the arts and sciences, and management and business.
If you are a new or continuing graduate student, you are in good company here at NLU. We are recognized across the state and around the country for the master’s and doctoral degrees offered by our National College of Education. In spring 2009, NLU’s College of Arts and Sciences launched its first Ph.D. program, in community psychology. Also, graduate degrees in fields ranging from adult education and human services to public policy and written communication continue to be popular choices.
The university’s name was changed to the Chicago Kindergarten Training School (1887), Chicago Kindergarten College (1893), the National Kindergarten and Elementary College (1912) and then the National College of Education (1930). The “National” part of the university’s name came about when the school became the professional school of the National Kindergarten Association. The university championed the concept of kindergarten and early education teaching in America and was one of the first teacher’s colleges in the country to offer a four-year program culminating in the bachelor of education degree.
National–Louis University united the name of National College of Education with that of trustee and benefactor Michael W. Louis. Louis’ significant gift spearheaded the transition from college to university. NLU now encompasses three colleges—National College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Management and Business. Together, they offer more than 60 academic programs, with degrees extending to the doctoral level.
