Northwestern’s earliest days, from the perpetual scholarships that were sold to raise funds to the foundation of graduate schools and undergraduate education. Over time, Northwestern built a world-class library, including notable collections, such as the Library of African Studies. Academia at Northwestern was also contentious at times; during the Great Depression, a proposal to merge with the University of Chicago sparked debate and strong opposition.
Northwestern weathered turbulent times while the nation was at war. In World War I, Northwestern formed and manned a field hospital in Europe, and during World War II, the war effort transformed campus. During the Vietnam War, demonstrations and activism shaped student life. The history of Northwestern University is traceable to a meeting on May 31, 1850 of nine prominent Chicago businessmen who had formed the idea of establishing a university to serve what had once been known as the Northwest Territory. On January 28, 1851, the Illinois General Assembly granted a charter to the Trustees of the North Western University, thereby making it the first chartered university in Illinois.
