Omdurman Ahlia University (OAU) is the first community non-profit university in Sudan[1] opened in 1986 by Dr Mohammed Omer Bashir. It is located in Omdurman, Khartoum.
Omdurman Ahlia University was up-graded to a University by the Committee of Non-Governmental Higher Education in accordance to resolution 67 issued on the 7th. of May 1995. This was followed by the promulgation of the University Laws and Regulations governing its activities.
Mission
In such an atmosphere and circumstances a group of university scholars, educationalists and prominent citizens who were aware of the difficulties encountered by Secondary School Leavers to pursue their Graduate studies, met in 1984 in Omdurman to discuss this issue. After a series of meetings in late Mohammed Sid Ahmed Swar Al Daheb residence, the honorable group decided to establish a non-governmental national higher education institution in Omdurman in recognition of its heritage in promoting non-governmental education.
Library
The Library is one of the pillars of the University. It was established within Omdurman Ahlia College in 1986. By that time it acquired 5000 copies donated by the Canadian Government, The British Council, the Sudanese American Association, UNESCO, some Universities and some individuals particularly Princess Soad Al Sabah. In 1995 the library moved to its previous premises. In 2005 it occupied its present site and is now known as Professor Omer Mohammed Osman’s (OMO) Library.
