Patna University

The Patna University, the first university in Bihar, was established in 1917 during the British Raj, and is the 7th oldest University of the Indian subcontinent. At that time, the jurisdiction of the university extended to Bihar, Orissa, and the Kingdom of Nepal. To begin with, the university conducted examinations for educational institutions under its jurisdiction right from school finals to the postgraduation levels. This continued almost for four decades, till the establishment of the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, and the Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar.

The University was established as an examining body and conducted examinations right from Matriculation to the Postgraduate classes. Its jurisdiction extended to Bihar, Orissa and Nepal and for four decades since its inception, this University guided the destiny of these States.

The Patna University remained the only University of Bihar till January 1952 when its character was changed to a Residential University though for some years it continued to conduct examinations of educational institutions in Nepal till the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, came into being. After establishment of the Utkal University, Bhubneshwar, the Patna University ceased to exercise its control over educational institutions in Orissa.

The Patna University has played vital role in India’s struggle for independence against colonial domination and also in the task of national reconstruction during post-independence period. This was the centre of nationalist and revolutionary activities. One needs to recount the services rendered by Mazharul Haque, Rajendra Prasad, Sri Krisna Sinha, Dr. Sachidanand Sinha, Anugral Narain Sinha, Jay Prakash Narayan, B. P. Mandal, Karpoori Thakur, L. N. Mishra, Baliram Bhagat, Ram Dulari Sinha, Sidheshwar Prasad and many others, all alumni of this University. The Quit India Movement of 1947 had its loudest echoes in the portels of this institution. The Total Revolution of Jai Prakash Narayan in 1974 had its support base in this University.

The university offers various Under Graduate Courses, Post Graduate Courses. It also give education of various diploma.
