Founded in 1847, Rockford College is an independent, coeducational, liberal arts institution located in Rockford, Ill., a city of 150,000 people about 85 miles northwest of Chicago. The College offers over 70 majors, minors and programs, a return-to-college program in management studies, masters programs in business and teaching, and several community education programs. Among its many accolades, Rockford College is one of only 11 institutions in Illinois with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, has been named a College with a Conscience, and is designated a Best in the Midwest college by the Princeton Review for seven years running.

1844 – Rev. Aratus Kent, brother of Germanicus Kent, founded the Rockford Female Seminary and became first president of the board of trustees both of Rockford Female Seminary and Beloit Men’s College. This was also the year that the YMCA was founded in London by George Williams. 1847 – Rockford Female Seminary received its charter. The city of Rockford had grown to a population of 2,500 residents. 1849 – The first classes were led by the Seminary’s first principal, Miss Anna Peck Sill, in a former county courthouse located on North First Street, itself a converted horse barn.
