Spalding University, one of the most historic institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, combines a sincere dedication to comprehensive, modern education with a genuine respect for its rich academic heritage. Evolving from the Nazareth Academy, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in 1814 near Bardstown, Kentucky, Spalding University is the oldest University west of the Alleghenies to be steeped in the Catholic tradition. Today this urban, co-educational institution offers twenty-five degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level, providing quality, real-world learning in liberal and professional studies to over 2000 students. Spalding represents the synthesis of nearly 200 years of values-based tradition and flexible, relevant, 21st century educational programs.
Promoting and embracing diversity while understanding the competing responsibilities that students face, Spalding is truly home to the “every-student.” Not simply a place to obtain a degree, Spalding offers many amenities from comprehensive learning resources to intercollegiate athletics to community partnerships and more to help its students further develop as individuals and become successful citizens.
Spalding University dates to 1814, when the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth established Nazareth Academy at Nazareth, near Bardstown, Kentucky. Spalding’s name is derived from and honors Catherine Spalding, the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, who is regarded as the founder of social work in the Louisville area.
As was the case with many 19th century academies for young women, the school not only conducted the standard secondary school curriculum but college subjects as well, and served as a training center for sisters who were to teach in other schools.
Early on there also developed a long-term involvement and dedication to nursing and health care. In 1821 the Nazareth sisters took over operation of the infirmary at St. Joseph’s College in Bardstown, and it was from that springboard that the health care apostolate was launched. During the Civil War, faculty and staff members of the school served as nursing sisters for both the Union and Confederate armies.
