The State University of Zanzibar or SUZA as it is commonly called, is one of Zanzibar’s most popular and successful universities, set within a beautiful seaside campus at Beit-el-Ras and an equally attractive campus in the heart of the historic Stone Town. Students and staff enjoy some of the finest campus environments in Zanzibar, boasting an unrivalled mix of town life, countryside and coastline. Established by Act No. 8 of 1999 of the House of Representatives of Zanzibar, the State University of Zanzibar has been designed to run programmes to produce professional teachers for secondary and high schools as well as to preserve, enhance, transmit and disseminate knowledge in arts, sciences and technologies in allied and applied fields through teaching and research thereby meeting the demands of an increasingly diverse market.
The vision of the University project is to become the centre of excellence in learning, teaching, research and publication which will cater for the needs of national, regional and global communities.
The mission of the State University of Zanzibar is to utilize all resources and contributions of stakeholders to effectively participate in providing the United Republic of Tanzania with qualified and competent human resources who shall be the catalyst for change and provide policy inputs in bringing sustainable, cultural and socio-economic development and well-being in conformity with national and international norms and standards.
The main library at “The State University of Zanzibar” is an Institution of long standing history, which goes back to with the establishment of the Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (IKFL) 1979. This library is now under the authority of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) including the said Institute following the establishment of SUZA in 2001.
