The Joseph I. Lubin House, located at 11 East 61st Street, is headquarters for Syracuse University’s Manhattan Campus. Alumni events, meetings, classes, and auditions all take place here, along with exhibitions in the Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery, SU’s New York art space. It is also home to offices for Admissions, External Affairs, and Financial Aid.
From its founding in 1870, Syracuse University has been the embodiment of Scholarship in Action—education that transcends traditional boundaries through a combination of innovative thinking, daring choices and entrepreneurial attitude. Our iconic campus is nestled amongst the rolling hills of Central New York—itself a crucible of historic change and progress. Building on that foundation, SU continues to create opportunities for students and faculty to push limits, build pathways, and make connections that lead to new discoveries and transformational change.
SU Florence alumni from around the world returned to Florence in October to participate in the center’s 50th Anniversary Festa, a three-day celebration with an optional fourth-day excursion to the Tuscan countryside. “My semester in Florence was by far my best in college, but on this visit I saw so many things that I never had the opportunity to see while living in Florence,” said Isabel Smith Margulies, SUF ’98, of Paris.
Syracuse University’s faculty of distinguished scholar-teachers attracts outstanding students from every part of the United States and the world. This strength is evident in both our achievements and our diversity, reflecting SU’s legacy as a place of access and opportunity and its unique excellence among institutions of higher education.
Library
Syracuse University’s main library is the Ernest S. Bird Library, which opened in 1972. Its seven levels contain 2.3 million books, 11,500 periodicals, 45,000 feet (14,000 m) of manuscripts and rare books, 3.6 million microforms, and a café. There are also several departmental libraries on campus. Many of the landmarks in the history of recorded communication between people are in the university’s Special Collections Research Center, from cuneiform tablets and papyri to several codices dating from the 11th century, to the invention of printing.
