The Copperbelt University was established by an act of the Zambian Parliament in 1987. The Copperbelt University is located in Kitwe and earlier it was part of the University of Zambia. The Copperbelt University is organised under five schools and a lifelong education directorate.
The motto of the Copperbelt University is “Knowledge and Service”. Enshrined in the motto are the following strands: * Knowledge and service go together. Without knowledge service is hardly possible. Without the use of knowledge in service of mankind, knowledge is useless.
The main library occupies two floors of the Central Administration Building. It is the principal information provider for all students and staff. The Library focuses on meeting the learning, teaching and research needs of the University by developing and sustaining a comprehensive, appropriate and up-to date collection of information and knowledge resources. The Library has a collection of nearly 25,000 volumes, which is still expanding, and a wide range of journal on most of the taught subjects in the University.
Highly used items are found in the Short Loan Collection, while the Special Collections wing of the Library stocks all University Publications, thesis, Government documents and all local publications. This wing provides very good research facilities. Besides providing Library users with information services, the Library also provides printing, bindery and photocopying services. The Library is currently working on improving its (Information Technology) IT base so that users can easily access a wide range of information sources.
