Thomas Aquinas College

Thomas Aquinas College is a Roman Catholic liberal arts college offering a single integrated academic program. It is located in Santa Paula, California north of Los Angeles. It offers a unique education with courses based on the Great Books and seminar method. It has school accreditation from the American Academy for Liberal Education, a national accrediting agency, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a regional accrediting board for California and Guam.

Fundamental in the Catholic intellectual tradition is the conviction that learning means discovering and growing in the truth about reality. It is the truth that sets men free and nothing else. Since truth concerns both natural and supernatural matters, the College’s program has both natural and divine wisdom as its ultimate objectives.

There are no majors, no minors, no electives, no specializations. The arts and sciences which comprise the curriculum are organized into a comprehensive whole. The College aims at providing its students with a thorough grounding in the arts of thinking and a broad and integrated vision of the whole of life and learning.

“American Catholics are becoming increasingly aware of the growing tendency of Catholic colleges to secularize themselves – that is, to loosen their connection with the teaching Church and to diminish deliberately their Catholic character.”

The Blue Book arose from conversations among several philosophy professors who were concerned about the direction of modern Catholic liberal education. They wanted not to return to some earlier form of education in America, but to something that resonated with the kind of academic excellence that flourished in ancient Greece or in the great medieval universities in Europe.
