Introduction:
The United States Sports Academy was the first and is the only of its kind in the United States. It was established in 1972 to turn around a new scientific finding that linked poor preparation of coaches to the injuries incurred by the athletes they supervised. Today, coaches everywhere can prepare thoroughly for their work. Through sports-focused instruction, support of research, and teamwork with professional groups like the National Federation of State High School Associations, the Academy showed how to meet sports professionals’ educational needs. Past Academy graduates include Iowa State Cyclones head basketball coach Greg McDermott; Texas Tech Red Raiders head football coach Mike Leach; Dennis Lindsey of the Houston Rockets; TCU Horned Frogs head women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie; Western Michigan Broncos head basketball coach Steve Hawkins; University of Texas Associate Athletics Director Lynn Wheeler and Nashville Predators Director of Hockey Operations Michael Santos.
History:
The United States Sports Academy celebrated a significant milestone in 2002: its thirtieth year as America’s only graduate school of sport. At a time when many independent institutions of higher learning were closing their doors, what has made the Academy so different, so able to thrive in a tough educational environment? How has the Academy succeeded in so ably meeting its stated mission: to serve the nation and the world as a sport education resource, upgrading sport through programs of instruction, research and service.
