Universitas Negeri Medan in the fifties, after the revolution, the physical, the growth of Junior High School (SMP) and the Secondary school (high school) so rapidly, so that the need for education staff (teachers) who qualified at that time can be met. In many ways the Government, represented by the Ministry of Education opened the teacher education institutions, such as the Secondary School Teacher (PGSLP) and BI courses to educate prospective teachers, especially teachers who served in junior high and high school education. Although the effort was so vigorously carried out, but the number of teachers to the needs of North Sumatra has not been fulfilled in a short time. Starting from this situation, in 1956 several prominent educators in North Sumatra opened College of Teacher Education called onset, this idea was sponsored by prof. Ani Manopo Abbas, SH, who at that time served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Society North Sumatra University (USU), G. Sianipar, head of the Inspection of Public Education and RM Simanjutak, Director of SMAN 1 Medan.
Onset when Universitas Negeri Medan opened the Department of English, Science Education, Science Society (then known as the Civic Law) and Physical Education. PTPG establishment did not last long, because then for the sake of completeness North Sumatra University (established by the Foundation of the University of North Sumatra in 1952) when used as a public university in 1955, PTPG merge into one part of the University of North Sumatra with the faculty name and Science Teaching Education (Guidance and Counseling). This process occurred in 1957, Based on the Decree No. PPK. 95254 dated August 22, 1957, resmilah FKIP be one Faculty at North Sumatra University (USU).
