The Universität zu Köln is one of the oldest universities in Europe and, with over 44,000 students, one of the largest universities in Germany. The university is part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, an association of Germany’s leading research universities. Universität zu Köln is furthermore the German founding member of the Community of European Management Schools and International Companies (CEMS).
While many other university foundations in the late medieval Germany its origin to the initiative of important spiritual and temporal rulers owed, it was in Cologne, the citizens who built the university. Thus, the Universität zu Köln is today a city-university in two ways: by the citizens of Cologne and founded as a campus university located in the middle of the city. Geographically it is located in close proximity to the north in large commercial and industrial Rhine / Ruhr and the southern city of Bonn.
Establishment of the Universität zu Köln. After Prague (1348), Vienna (1365) and Heidelberg (1386) Cologne is the fourth university was founded in late medieval German Reich. The foundation charter of the University shall be signed by Pope Urban VI in Perugia.
