Université d’Angers harks back to a very long history of universities in the city. By 1080, the “Studium” or the School of Angers was already a renowned scholarly institution. It received the title “university” in 1356, and in 1364, Charles V granted the university its autonomy and privileges. The fi rst statutes were drawn up in 1373. By 1450, the university had colleges in Law, Theology, Arts and Medicine, which attracted students from the whole of France. Sharing the fate of other universities, it was abolished during the French Revolution. Angers remained an important focus of intellectual and academic activity, and higher education persisted, with free, public courses in Medicine as early as 1796, and with the creation of the School of Medicine of Angers in 1807.
The birth of the Université d’Angers center in 1958 and the ITU in 1966, the College academic legal in 1968 and finally the College academic literature in 1970 began promoting the University Centre for the rank of Angers University. In 1971, nearly two centuries after its removal, that the University of Angers finally restored.
This overhaul is accompanied by a rapid expansion. Around the IUT, the campus of Belle Beille grows with the establishment of the Faculty of Science, and Law Schools and letters. The Faculty of Medicine, built in 1970-1971, remains around the hospital. Mid 1990, the Law School moved to the city center and a new campus is growing around her in the Saint-Serge, the Presidency and the central University is also expanding into the country. Two antennas are open: in Cholet in 1987 and at Saumur in 2004.
