Université de Nanterre – Paris X in 1965 under the direction of architects Eduard Albert (1910-1968) and François Marot, the construction of the library was completed in 1969. Its architectural design combines harmoniously concrete and steel and is replaced by large volumes useful, whose flexibility is still proven today.
The structure of the set is functional. Des grandes salles de lecture de 20 m de large et 50 m de long, with no supporting posts, can easily adjust the space. They are very bright because of windows lined over their entire length. A conveyor system linking mechanical shops of the central tower at the entrance to the library.
Université de Nanterre – Paris X was built in the 1960s on the outskirts of Paris as an extension of the Sorbonne. Based on the American model, it was created as a campus (as opposed to the old French universities which were smaller and integrated to the city they were in). Université de Nanterre – Paris X became famous shortly after its opening by being at the center of the May 68 student rebellion. The campus was nicknamed “Nanterre, la folle” (Mad Nanterre) or “Nanterre la rouge” (Red Nanterre, in reference to communism). To this day, the university remains traditionally a center of the left wing, as opposed to universities such as Paris II-Assas, traditionally inclined to the right.
