Université de Perpignan
Université de Perpignan is a French university, located in Perpignan. Peter IV, having conquered in 1344 the town of Perpignan and reunited to his estates the Kingdom of Majorca, of which Perpignan was the capital, compensated that city for its loss of power by founding, at the request of the magistrates, 20 March, 1349, the University of Perpignan, for the teaching of civil and canon law, and other arts and sciences. In the charter he praised “the deep learning of the professors of Perpignan”.
The title “Via Domitia”- name of the ancient Roman road connecting Spain and Italy – was chosen in order to emphasise the cultural links between the Université de Perpignan, the people of the Mediterranean basin, and people all over the world. The University offers a wide range of subjects and welcomes many students from abroad. It also has contacts with many other universities – in Catalonia, obviously – but also from overseas. while not denying its ancient roots, the University remains attached to its organisation on several different sites, convinced that it can avoid uniformity, while maintaining its clear identity and programme by remaining open to the wider world.
Université de Perpignan
The first Université de Perpignan was established in 1349 by King Peter IV of Aragon. It never became an important center, affected by the far more influential University of Toulouse and University of Montpellier.
