Laval University (French: Université Laval) is the oldest centre of education in Canada and was the first institution in North America to offer higher education in French. Its main campus is located in Quebec City, Quebec, the capital of the province, on the outskirts of the historic city.
Université Laval offers close to 400 academic programs in 17 faculties and 235 research Centres, Chairs and Institutes. It is classified as a Medical-Doctoral university for its medical school and extensive graduate population (approx. 25%). It is the home of North America’s only francophone faculties of Agriculture and Food Sciences, and of Forestry and Geomatics.
In 1663, with the authorization of the King of France, Louis XIV, Monseigneur François de Laval, the first bishop of New France, founded in Québec City the colony’s first educational institution, the Séminaire de Québec.
