Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV controlled by the Church passes gradually under the supervision of royal power after the recovery of Aquitaine by the French crown. From the sixteenth century, the state intervenes more and more often in academic affairs. These interferences lead to the edict of April 1679 in which Louis XIV tries to unify the university in France, by fixing the period of study and graduation requirements. But the new system is malfunctioning and the Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV jeopardy until the Revolution of 1789.
In 1873, the Law Faculty of Bordeaux moved up Pey-Berland, and on the campus of Pessac in 1967. Masters as famous as Lacanterie-Baudry, Duguit, Monnier, Benzacar, Bonnard, Bonnecase, Vizioz, Bernard, Laborde-Lacoste, Garrigou-Lagrange … have the reputation of the Faculty which quickly became famous for his “school” of public law.
Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV is the will to set up an entity more consistent and dynamic, which in 1995 led to the formation of the University Montesquieu – Bordeaux IV, after partition of the former University of Bordeaux 1.
