The University of Hyderabad is an institute of post-graduate teaching and research. The school was established by an act of the Parliament of India in 1974 as a Central University. Over the years, it has emerged as a top ranking institute of higher education and research in India. The university also offers courses under distance learning programs. The university is a member of the ‘Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU), the ‘Association of Commonwealth Universities’ (ACU) and ‘International Council for Distance Education’. An Academic Staff College has been functioning on the university campus since 1988 under the UGC scheme for improving the standards of teaching in colleges and universities. The college organizes orientation and refresher courses for college and university teachers.

University with potential for Excellence

To introduce the element of excellence in the University System, the University Grants Commission has identified a  few Universities and granted them the status of ‘Universities with Potential for Excellence’, with the help of a high power Committee. The objective of this initiative was to provide these select institutions with augmented inputs, including additional funds, to sustain and enhance quality  of education and research. Based on the evaluation and recommendations of this committee, the University Grants Commission declared the University of Hyderabad as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’. The University was sanctioned a grant of Rs. 30 crore under this scheme for interfacial Studies & Research and Holistic Development for a period of 5 years (2002-2007).

The university is divided into the following schools. Each of which offers multiple post-graduate/research courses in their respective domains.

Extracurricular activities
The number of cultural activities are held throughout the year on the campus, some of which are held by the University Authorities, and the rest of which are held by the students themselves.
Sukoon is an annual cultural festival where students from colleges all over Hyderabad are invited to participate. Annual sports competitions are held in various disciplines. Festivals like Diwali and Dussera are celebrated by various student groups.
