University of Minnesota

Founded in 1851, the University of Minnesota is a presence throughout the state with five campuses and numerous research and outreach centers. Internationally the University touches every continent, partnering with countries such as China and India to collaborate in the areas of research, education, and business.

From the Crookston campus on the edge of the northern prairie to the newest campus less than 50 miles from the state s southern border in Rochester, the University serves Minnesota s families and businesses while contributing knowledge and innovations to help build a healthier, sustainable world. The University also makes financial assistant to student education a priority. In 2009, 13,329 students or 42.2 percent of the resident undergraduate student population received aid through the new Promise Scholarship.

The University of Minnesota was founded as a preparatory school in 1851, seven years before the territory of Minnesota became a state. Financial problems forced the school to close during the Civil War, but with the help of Minneapolis entrepreneur John Sargent Pillsbury, it reopened in1867. Known as the father of the University, Pillsbury, who was a University regent, state senator, and governor, used his influence to establish the school as the official recipient of public support from the Morrill Land-Grant Act, designating it as Minnesota’s land-grant university.
