Τhe University of Western Macedonia is a multi-campus university in Northwestern Greece. University of Western Macedonia was founded in 2002 in Kozani. On 1 January 2004, the University of Western Macedonia absorbed four departments that had previously formed part of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

University of Western Macedonia has completed a significant part of its Administrative Structure and is in contact with distinguished academics for the composition of a 5 year strategic planning.

In 2002 the Ministerial Council under the Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Simitis decided the foundation of the University of Western Macedonia, and published the decree-law No. 92/11-4-2003. In June 2003 the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mr Petros Eythymiou throughout the Φ.120.61/132/61865/Β2/25.6.2003 decision appoints the members of the Administrative Committee.
