Vassar College

Vassar College is a private, highly selective, coeducational liberal arts college in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York, in the United States. With 2,475 undergraduates, Vassar is known for its small class sizes and strong emphasis on teaching. Vassar’s curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programs. The college was among the first to teach cognitive science, psychology, and Russian studies, and among the first to experiment with interdepartmental courses in the early 1900s

In the scenic Hudson Valley, 75 miles north of New York City, in Poughkeepsie (area population, about 100,000). Vassar is in a residential area three miles from the city center.

More than 290 faculty members, virtually all holding the doctorate or its equivalent. All classes are taught by faculty members. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1, average class size, 17. More than 70% of the faculty live on campus or nearby; one or two faculty families live in each residence hall as house fellows.

Library
Vassar is home to one of the largest undergraduate library collections in the U.S. The library collection today – which actually encompasses eight libraries at Vassar – contains over 1.6 million volumes and 7,500 serial, periodical and newspaper titles, as well as an extensive collection of microfilm and microfiche. Vassar has been a Federal depository library for selected U.S. Government documents since 1943 and currently receives approximately 25% of the titles available through the Federal Depository Program. Since 1988, Vassar has been a New York State Reference Center, part of the New York Depository Program. The library also selectively purchases United Nations documents.
