Founded in 1838 by Horace Mann, Westfield State is an education leader committed to providing every generation of students with a learning experience built on its founding principle as the first co-educational college in America to offer an education without barrier to race, creed or economic status. This spirit of innovative thinking and social responsibility is forged in a curriculum of liberal arts and professional studies that creates a vital community of engaged learners who become confident, capable individuals prepared for leadership and service to society.
The University, from its beginnings, prepared students to serve their communities as teachers, and teacher education remains a central part of the programs and a model for engagement with the community. Faculty are professionally involved in their disciplines in the community to support learning and scholarship. Building upon a strong base of graduate programs, Westfield State University intends to strengthen and expand its graduate offerings. The University occupies a leadership position in offering post-baccalaureate and professional development programs for educators and will utilize new technologies to improve upon and expand our delivery of these programs. Collaborative relationships with other universities will also make possible the efficient development of new programs in other areas marked by strong undergraduate programs.
