When we think of Jaipur, its sobriquet ‘pink city’ comes to our mind. We feel that the city is either painted pink or its buildings are in lovely pink. But contrary to the general notion, the original colour of the city was ‘garro’ (terracotta). This was established by 11 paintings of the mid-18th century. In 1868, Sawai Ram Singh II, the ruler of Jaipur ordered to beautify the city. He got the streets painted in different colours but when the work was finished, he was not happy. He then felt that all buildings and shops must look alike and got them all repainted in ‘garro’. It was easily available in Jaipur city. Later Jaipur was describes by people as ‘Red City’.
Later on, a journalist names Stanley Reed, published a book titled. The Royal Tour in India and the Prince of Wales’ visit to India. In his book Stanley Reed described Jaipur city as ‘Pink City’. Since then the city of Jaipur is also known as ‘The Pink City’.
